So much in life is about attitude and it’s parents that instill attitudes in children by example every day of their lives.
To teach kids to have a healthy, positive, can-do attitude to life, we need to start with ourselves and the example we give our kids on a daily basis.
Do you grumble about doing the house chores? If you do, chances are your children will grumble when you ask them to clean up.
Do you leave your dirty clothes on the floor? If you do, chances are your children will leave their clothes on the floor.
Do you grumble about having to go to work as if you are on a day-trip to hell? If you do, chances are your children will grumble about going to school as if you’re sending them off to hell for the day.
Do you play the martyr with regular chants of “nothing ever goes right for me”? If you do, chances are your children will never learn that the control for making things go their way in life is in their hands and no-one else’s.
Each and every day, parents teach their children to have either a negative or positive attitude to life. Think about the attitude you’re showing your kids today.
Life Skills for Children Action Tip:
Make a conscious effort to notice the negative comments you make or actions you see yourself doing today. Turn them into positives (even if they don’t feel like it) and make a conscious effort to use/do the positive each time you catch yourself with a negative mindset.
Negative Attitude: I could do without bloody work today!
Positive Attitude: I’m lucky to have a job and be able to pay the mortgage, feed the kids, take pride in my role as provider.
Over time, you’ll actually find yourself automatically feeling more positive and making more positive remarks.
